A little over a year ago, La Costa brought in superintendent Bob Clarkson, who had been at TPC Sawgrass, and the two La Costa courses are now a reflection of his expertise. “I think,” says Sullivan, “we are on the way to having the best-conditioned resort courses in the world.”

Nicklaus said he was pleasantly surprised by La Costa. “I’ve never seen it in such great condition,” he said. “The whole place looks different.”
